LAMARTINE A. de, “Histoire de la Turquie”, Paris: Librairie de constitutionnel, 1854-55. First edition, COMPLETE in 8 Volumes; in-12mo, p. [4],400 + [4],424 + [4],420 + [4],450 + [4],400 + [4],446 + [4],413 + [4],403.

Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine was a famous French author, poet, and statesman, who was instrumental in the foundation of the French Second Republic and the continuation of the Tricolore as the flag of France. As orientalist, he travelled to the Near East, the fruit of which was his first non-fiction work, “Travel to the East” (1835). In this book (despite his admiration for ancient Greek art and his Greek-themed works) Lamartines pro-Turkishness is already apparent, which led him later (1854) to write the “History of Turkey”.

Excellent half leather binding of the period, marbled carton boards, slightly worn; marbled endpapers, spotted edge pages, extremely tight inside; a few red pencil marks on 2 last volumes. Very Good copy.
