The HENRY BLACKMER’S COPY. First edition. Printed in London in French language. 8vo, pp. xii, 287. Frontispiece and a full-page engraved plate. “Madame Panam’s father was a Greek émigré from Smyrna; he left there in 1780 and presumably settled in France” (Blackmer). Memories of her relationship with Duke Ernest I of Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld that caused great scandal and became the first book to be censored by the German Confederation. Printed on the eve of the Greek Revolution.
Ex-libris booklabel of “HENRY BLACKMER” & “Margaret Poulett” on front pastedown endpaper. Contemporary straight grained morocco, covers paneled in gilt, spine divided in six panels tooled in gilt with title on red morocco. External rubbing, in very fine condition inside.
