Grote (1794-1871) was a reformist and radical, and a major historian, instrumental in establishing University College, London, later its President. His writings on Greek history, and major philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, established him as a preeminent Victorian scholar and historian. The history covers the period from about 770 BC, the period of Pesistratus in Athens to the end of the generation of Alexander in 300 BC. Contemporary uniform leather spines, cloth boards.
