Rare copper plate map of Corfu, most probably separately issued in 1602. Map dim. 24.5x34cm. Presenting the island with various geographical and human made features depicted graphically and with top oriented to South. The text of the title refers to a Hospital erected by the Holy League for the Christian soldiers that is depicted in the map at Spianada area (Σπιαναδα) and most probably refers to the Venetian “Ospital per Milizie”. Ships around the island disembark soldiers close to the Porta S. Nicolo that are directed to the Hospital.

The map is based on the plate of Claude Ducheti’s map of Corfu issued in Rome c.1570 (Zacharakis 1423), also tracked in Paris National Library published by Orlandi in Rome 1602 (Zacharakis 1423, Άννα Αβραμέα, “Απογραφή πληθυσμού της Κέρκυρας (1812) σε χειρόγραφο χάρτη της Εθνικής Βιβλιοθήκης Παρισίων”, Ερανιστής, 12, 1975, αρ.71). The current map was issued by Hendrik van Schoel, a publisher that is tracked to republish Giovanni Orlandi plates at the beginning of the 17th century, most probably in separate prints.

Margins cut to the limits of the plate, map pasted on larger paper, spotting.
