Woodcut map of Crete 45x27cm, based on the 1513 First map of Crete designed by Martin Waldseemuller. On Verso descriptive text in Latin about Crete framed with two large allegorical woodcut designs. The editor of this edition, Michael Villanovus (better known as Michael Servetus), was a Spanish physician and theologian that was tried for heresy. He was burned at the stake in Geneva 1553 by Calvins orders, with many copies of Servetuss books, including this one, following him into the flames.

Spotting & stain along middle-fold with signs of contemporary restorations along fold on reverse.

Rare and one of the earliest obtainable maps of Crete.
