Although these coins bear the date 1921, they were actually struck in 1922. After the devaluation of the Drachma, as a result of the defeat and withdrawal of the Greek forces from Asia Minor, the metal value of these coins was higher than their face value, therefore they were never released for circulation. The majority of them were melted down in 1926 to provide the metal for the 2 Drachmas coins of 1926. Only few coins have survived, probably a total of less than 50 for both the Heaton and King's Norton mints, with the KM considerably scarcer than H.
