ITALY, Papal States. Rome. Paul III (Alessandro Farnese), 1534-1549. Medal (Bronze, 43 mm, 45.66 g, 6 h), struck from dies by Cesati, in advance for the Jubilee Year of 1550, 1549. .PAVLVS.III.PONT.MAX.AN.XVI. Bare-headed and bearded bust of Paul III to right, wearing an ornamental pluviale (or Papal cloak), adorned with scenes of the opening of the Holy Door, and a large medallion; on the shoulder of the pluviale, ANNO.IVBILAEI.MDL. Rev. ALMA.ROMA View of the walled city of Rome. Attwood p. 380, fig. 71. Bargello 1122. Pollard 534. Whitman and Varriano 3b. TV 2077. Well-struck and with an attractive tan-gold patina. Minor striking crack, otherwise, good very fine.
