ITALY, Papal States. Rome. Circa 1550. Medal (Bronze, 44 mm, 57.06 g, 6 h), on queen Dido of Carthage, an early cast - on a tight flan without the city name on the reverse - by A. Cesati (il Grechetto, d. after c. 1564), 1550s - prior to 1562. ΔΙΔΩ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑ Draped bust of Dido to right, wearing jeweled hair band and olive wreath. Rev. [ΚΑΡΧΗΔΩΝ] View of the walled city of Carthage with temples, pylons, palaces and an amphitheater; below, galleys. Attwood 942. Bargello 1137. Kress 368 = NG 419. TV, xvi, 2102. An attractive example with fine details and a dark patina. Very fine.
