Lot 01224 | XF

FRANCE. Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Medal (Bronze, 50 mm, 51.20 g, 12 h), unsigned, but by Jean Warin, undated, but 1671. LVD∙MAGNVS∙ ∙FR∙ET∙NAV∙REX Bare-headed and cuirassed bust of Louis XIV to right. Rev. ACVNCTIS∙IAM∙TVTA∙PROCELLIS (=now safe from all storms) View of the port of Dunkerque and its fortifications. Ménestrier 21, 3. Trésor II, X, 7-8. Rare. Attractively toned. Minor deposits on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of a Bon Vivant, ex Rauch 111, 1 December 2020, 1395.

Oddly enough, this medal's reverse is said by some to show the harbour of Marseille, while other authorities, followed here, ascribe it to Dunkerque!

STARTING PRICE  CHF 280
