Lot 06039 | M

BLAEU W. J., "Pascaarte vander Zee Archipelago...", Amsterdam 1618. Engraved sea chart 55x24,5cm on heavy paper for sea use. The earliest published extended sea chart of the Greek Archipelago, from the third part of “Het Licht der Zeevaert”, published in 1618 by Blaeu. The printed portolans started to supersede the hand-drawn ones in the late 16th century. Dutch specialized sea pilots followed and dominated the sea market, but did not cover the Eastern Mediterranean regions. Only in 1618 with the publication of the third part of “Het Licht der Zeevaert”, in 4 oblong for sea use, appeared printed charts of the Greek areas. Taken out the printed Italian Isolaria, that were focused in an island by island presentation, this particular Dutch chart of Archipelago is the first ever printed chart of a big part of Archipelago, covering from Chios and Euboea to Crete and chartering the basic sea route in the Aegean. Extremely rare, as these sea pilots were strictly for sea use. Few light brown spots, short tears along edges & 2 extra vertical folds. Zacharakis 395. EXTREMELY RARE.
