Tournefort started out on his voyage to the Near East in the spring of 1700. He visited thirty-eight islands of the Greek archipelago, as well as Northern Anatolia, Pontus and Armenia, and reached Tiflis in Georgia, areas isolated and rarely visited by Europeans at that time. Until today this work remains an invaluable source of information as he describes the places he visited in a particular systematic manner, blending his very well documented information with vivid descriptions of his encounters with local people. The fine engraved plates give us vivid and unique images of people and cities of the Levant.
