He had first visited Bursa and its area, Smyrna and the valleys of the rivers flowing into the Aegean, continuing to Ankara, Konia and the hinterland. Finally he had traveled all around Pontos and the Black sea coastline. Hawley has described accurately the multicultural Asia Minor, its economic aspects and society, just before the war.
