Friedrich Spenheim (1632-1701) was one of the most important German Geographers and Historians of Sacred Geography and History. From 1672 up to his death, in 1701, he was the chief Librarian of the University of Leiden library. This is probably the most important of his works. In three volumes and around 5000 pages he provides a comprehensive image of sacred geography, the history of the churches and the main theological issues dividing the churches. The maps included in this work are listed below:1.Orbis Vetus Ubi Primae Ecclesiaw Sedes2.Palaestina Vetus seu Terra Israelis Alias Iudaea3.Roman Imperium Qua Orientale4.Dioecesis Orientis5. Dioecesis Aegypti6. Dioecesis Asiana Pontica Thracica7.Proefectura Illyrici Orientalis8.Imperium Roman Qua Occidentale9.Vicariatus Romae, Italiae, et Illyr, Occidentalis10.DioecesisAfricana11.Dioecesis Galliarum12.Dioecesis HispaniarumAll maps are unsigned and Zacharakis includes only 3 of them, under Spenheim, with references: 3418, 3419 and 3420. The two maps of Greece-Asia Minor & Cyprus-Middle East included in the current edition are not in Zacharakis. Most probably the maps could be engraved by Elland (one of the most famous late baroque Dutch engravers), as his name appears in all 3 volume vignettes. VERY RARE.
