Barkley, a British officer, travelled extensively in the Ottoman empire, allied at that period with England. This book is about his travels in Romelia in 1876. It has been published with the outbreak of the Russian-Turkish war, representing the increasing interest for the area. Barkley gives accurate accounts of what he actually see, picturing in details the multinational Ottoman lands of the Eastern Balkans in the second half of 19th century.
