Ainsworth (1807-1896) was a famous surgeon, traveler, geographer and geologist. In 1836 he was appointed as surgeon to the Euphrates British expedition. The current precious account was conducted during his travels throughout Asia Minor and Armenia from 1838 up to 1841. One of the very early scientific travel accounts on the interior of Asia Minor and Pontic hinterland. Ainsworth was praised for his travels discoveries by the Royal Geographic Society. Two library labels (one in each volume front cover backside paper) with no other marks. 2 wood-engraved frontispieces and illustrations, 3 folding maps hand-coloured in outline, publishers 8 and 4 page catalogues at end of each volume. Original blindstamped green cloth. Bumped corners, lightly worn along joints, light soiling of title pages and frontispieces, light spotting on maps.
