AINSWORTH William Francis , "Travels in the track of the ten thousand Greeks; being a Geographical and Descriptive account...", London, John W. Parker, 1844. First edition. 8vo, (20,5x13cm), pp.xii,248,[8]. Complete with a folding map of Asia Minor. Cover cloth of spine missing but tight, interior in fine condition. Ainsworth (1807-1896) was a famous surgeon, traveller, geographer and geologist. In 1836 he was appointed as surgeon to the Euphrates British expedition. Just after he travelled throughout Asia Minor and Armenia from 1838 up to 1841 and became one of the British specialists of the area. In 1842 he published a first travel account. However the current work, published two years later, is considered as more important, presenting for the first time an effort to reconstruct the "March of The Ten Thousand Greeks" (Κάθοδος tων Μυρίων) based on Xenophon's "Kyrou Anabasis". It is a thorough scientific, geographic and descriptive account with observations made on the spot. His publication opened a scientific discussion about the exact route of the Greek missionary army, still open today. The Prussian traveller Karl Koch, very few years later, followed with his own publication on the same matter, but proposing different paths for several cases. Very Rare. Not in Atabey or Blackmer.
