The complete Clarke’s account regarding his extensive travels in the Levant (volumes 5-6 covers Scandinavia). 129 (of 131) plates, all aquatints and copper engravings (missing Voevoda and interior of Church in volume 4). Clarke, an educated British teacher, travelled with his pupil Cripps in the Levant, starting in 1799 from Russia and through the Crimea arrived in Constantinople. In the following three years they visited many Greek areas, as well Egypt and Palestine. This travel account provides a vivid picture of the Ottoman Lands including rich information along antiquities, minerals, plants, people, customs, economy etc. It substantially contributed to the knowledge of the contemporary Greek society in Europe.
