First and only edition. Contemporary full leather binding, with elaborated iron clips of the time, tide and inside clean, a fine copy. Complete in one volume in 12mo, fully engraved half title, title, 12p.+898p.+36p. With 25 original copper engraved plates, including a map of the Ottoman Empire, a map and a plan of Chios (not in Zacharakis) and several beautiful views of towns and people of the Ottoman Empire. All illustrations most probably derived from first hand knowledge as the details in depictions of the Ottomans and the rare scene of Turkish wrestlers suggest. The current book, printed in Germany in the mid 17th century, is considered as one of the first attempts to produce a comprehensive work about Ottoman Empire and its people, in a period that still very few is known about this area. Due to this lack of first hand contemporary information, the editors republished in German all the 16th century works of Busbeck (main source about the Ottomans in Europe till then), adding recent accounts about the Turkish contemporary wars and blending the edition with several other short travel accounts and descriptions not published before, such as Ibrahim Stotschius’s accounts. Only three copies available in all public institutions. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. Extremely rare.
