The following 3 rare views are coming from the Folio travel book of Drake’s, Voyages and travels, one of the earliest travel accounts printed in London 1768. These views were not usually included and were additionally incorporated only in the 1768 edition. The reason, implied in the book’s appendix (p.702), indicates the interest of the British on the discoveries by the Dillettante Society expedition in Athens. The three plates are described on p.704/5. The plates are clearly based on real drawings of Athenenian antiquities, blended with imaginary landscape details (usual during the 18th century). “Ruins of Athens”, dim.23x19cm. Unidentified ruin of a temple with a bridge and Lycabetus hill clearly on the background. Taken into account the background landscape (Illissos river and Lycabetus hill) that is fairly accurate, the building could be the now lost temple of Dimitra Agrotera, demolished in 1778 by the Turkish governor Hasheki in order to provide building materials. Rare.
