Moreno Jose, “Viage a Constantinopla en el ano de 1784”, Madrid, Imprenta Real 1790. First edition, Folio (30x22cm), pp.[18],360,xxxiii. Complete with 25 copper engraved plates including beautiful views and several maps, among the first Spanish maps of the area by Velasquez and Aguadro. This rare work describes the travel of the Spanish naval mission to Constantinople in 1784 to negotiate a trade agreement and alliance with the Ottoman Empire. Moreno’s travel account is compiled from a manuscript prepared by Don Gabriel Aristizabal, commander of the mission. It was only at the very end of 18th century that Spain started to look towards the expansion of the trade-markets to the Levant, after focusing for centuries in Latin America. This is among the very first Spanish travel books about Greece and the Levant. Contemporary Spanish full leather, slightly rubbed, occasional waterstain throughout, signs of moisture on first and last leaves. Atabey 835, Blackmer 1182
