The first volume contains his fist hand account for the Greek war of independence written while the author travels in Constantinople, Morea and many Greek islands. Appointed as the French consular in Trebizond in 1826, he was one of the very first to extensively explore Pontus, visiting the unexplored hinterland of southern Black Sea. His detailed and accurate accounts are also based on period diplomatic reports.
