All 3 copper engraved folded maps present. Edward Gibbon (1737-1794), a pioneer specialist in Byzantine history, wrote his work during almost twenty years. Following the first edition (London 1776-1788), Gibbon have decided to print a new revised edition, of the total of his work. It is the current edition, printed in Basel under Gibbons personal supervision. Gibbons Byzantine History is of considerable significance and was the first systematic presentation of the Byzantium millennium. Contemporary half leather, with title in gilt in spines. Some edges slightly chipped, ownership inscriptions of a German professor on title pages & boards. Clean text, a very good copy.
