Du Mont Jean Baron Carlscroon, "Voyages de Mr. Du Mont, en France, en Italie, en Allemagne, a Malthe, et en Turquie", La Haye, Foulque-Honore, 1699. Second edition, complete in 4 volumes. 12mo, pp.335+377+281+356 with several engraved folded plates, including the beautiful and famous 17th cent. panorama of Smyrne (70x31cm). This second edition has completely different engravings from the first, prepared by Romeyn de Hooge, one of the best Dutch painters and engravers of the time. Provenance: from the former ROYAL Library of Saxony, coat of arms and library markings (in each volume) of Frederick Augustus I of Saxony (1750-1827), Elector of Saxony and designated King of Poland. Dumont (1667-1727), a French officer, has been arrested in Strasbourg in 1689, escaped in Italy and via Malta arrived in Constantinople in 1690. He will finally stay for almost 2 years in Smyrna with all the 3rd volume being an impressive description of Izmir and its area. The narrative covers, in the second volume, the travel to Constantinople through the Greek archipelago with detailed accounts of the Ottoman multinational society, customs, the role of women and the slaves. The description of the Greek islands and the Greek population of Constantinople and Smyrna are very valuable. Contemporary full leather, a fine clean copy. This edition is very rare. Atabey 377, Blackmer 514 (for a later English edition).
