Malte- Brun Conrald (publisher), "Annales des Voyages de Geographie et de l Histoire ou Collection des voyages nouveaux les plus estimes", Paris, 1807-1814. First and only edition of the first ever periodical travel accounts and discoveries series books. In 8vo. 19 volumes, of the 20 ever printed (Vols: 1-16 & 18-20), 23 folded copper engraved plates of maps (some with several maps) and 31 more plates/views, mostly folded. In the early 19th century Malte Brun, a Danish scientist, brought up a new initiative towards the growing European interest for travel accounts and new discoveries. He issued, in a form of independent volumes, several travel accounts in first edition. Each volume was compiled with the more recent discoveries, blended with engraved views and maps by the best geographers of France, like Lapie. Each independent volume was published every three months (in periodical basis), covering all new developments in travel and discoveries. Only 20 volumes have ever appeared, as the collapse of France in 1814 stopped the effort. Although covering all the world, these volumes are full of travel accounts about Greece (Peloponese, Lemnos, Pilio etc) and the Levant, published only here. Some of the important works included: the first travel account for Paphlagonia in Asia Minor (even the original manuscript is today lost), and very important maps, like the first ever map of Odessa (worn), of Sinop, of Amastris in the Black sea and the first scientific map of Bulgarian coastline, of Caucasus, of Cattaro bay, nautical chart of Lemnos (Λήμνος). Contemporary gilt calf with period decorations, very slightly rubbed, a fine clean set. A fine set of volumes extremely rarely found together.
