Chenavard Antoine Marie, "Voyage en Grece et dans le Levant fait en 1843 et 1844”, Lyon, Perrin, 1858. First and only edition. Folio (50x34,5cm), loose as issued. Brunet states that only 200 copies have ever printed. It was intended to be issued in 40 liaisons, each one with 4 plates to reach a total of 160 plates, but only the half ever appeared. This is a unique set including all plates and all sheets of text. Complete as follows: title, half title, 2 sheets of dedications printed as wrapper, 2 sheets of list of plates, one wrapper with title “Planches et Descriptions”, Expose: page 9 to 25 (loose sheets of text, p.25 back up of wrapper), 81 sheets of text/descriptions of the plates and 81 beautiful engraved plates by Dubouchet, Perret, Ruissel, Dechaud, Musson, Fugere et Seon after Chenavard et Rey. The work describe Chenavard’s travel in Greece during 1843-44 and contains splendid views of Athens, Lamia, Chalkis, Delphi, Ithaki etc. Chenavard (1787-1883) was a famous architect and archaeologist that studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and travelled with his friend and famous painter Rey. This very rare work has appeared, in the past, with 77 to 79 plates (Atabey 230, Blackmer 334 and BNF copies). A set with 80 plates appeared only once in an auction. Only the BNF copy includes the sheets of text/descriptions of plates, but only for the 79 plates present in that copy. It is the FIRST time that a set with 81 plates appear (including 18bis and 48bis plates and added them, with printed slips, in the list of plates) and the first time that appear in this loose format of all sheets of text and plates. It is strongly suggested that this is the final proof of sheets of text and final gathering of all the printed plates. Title expertly restored, some sheets of text with marginal moisture or frayed at the edges, 2/3 plates with marginal water-stain, but overall a fine and clean set.
