Franz Karacs, "Plan von Constantinopel .. von Kauffer und Lechevalier.. von Barbie du Bocage. der Angabe der Stadtviertel (Mahalle), Hartleben 1831, Pest. One of the first real topographical maps of Constantinople. Copper engraved 66x55cm, published in Pest (Budapest). This map is the result of more than 10 years scientific research by many scholars, mainly Purgstall, on Constantinoples neighbourhoods. Based geographically on the fundamental survey of Kauffer and Lechevalier published in 1800 and of its revision by Barbie du Bocage published in 1819, this topographical map by Karacs adds an extensive list on a Mahalle / neighbourhood scale (numbered places and important buildings marked on the spot), resulting in a more than 500 concrete references of the city. Karacs was the most important Hungarian cartographer of early 19th century and a copper engraver. The first comprehensive detailed map of the city, printed in the 1820s during Greek Revolution. Still a basic reference for the development of the city. Very rare.
