CHANTRE Ernest, "MISSION EN CAPPADOCE 1893-1894", Paris, 1898. First and only edition of the first scientific travel exploration of Capadocia. Folio (39x29cm), pp. 224 of text, with ~200 engraved vignettes and early photographs, one map of the itinerary of the travel exploration and the 26 full-page plates (some chromolithographed) of the Atlas, joined in the text volume. Original publishers paper covers, restored at the spine. Slightly frayed at some edges, overall a clean and very good set. Chantre (1843-1924), a French orientalist, traveller and archaeologist continued Perrots great expedition of 1861. At the end of the 19th century Cappadocia, the heartland ofAnatolia, was still unexplored. This travel expedition of a team of experts leaded by Chantre, took 2 years to be accomplished. The mission was financed by the French State, to counterbalance German Archaeological missions in the Ottoman Anatolia, after 1880. The results were impressive including the detailed accounts of two years researches around Cappadocia, discoveries and scientific analyses. Even the map was a contribution filling the gap of Kieperts "Kleinasien" map. This Folio edition was a scientific publication printed in just 200 copies. Extremely rare. Not in Atabey, Blackmer or any other known collection.
