PASPATES A., “Etudes sur les Tchinghianes de l’Empire Ottoman”, Constantinople, 1870. First and only edition. 4to (26x19cm), pp.652. Contemporary full leather, preserving original paper wrappers. A very good copy. Paspates, a Constantinopolitan Greek Doctor in Medecine, travelled extensively as a doctor in the Ottoman Empire in the 1860s. His job gave him the opportunity to enter in the much closed community of the Roma (Romani or Gypsies), at that time totally ignored by all other travelers. This is the first and very early systematic account on the Roma people of the Ottoman Empire. A reference precious work. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. Rare.
