Von Archenholtz (1741-1812) was a Prussian/Dutch officer who has served the Russian army under Potemkin. He became later Professor of History. Grigory Potemkin (1739-1791) was a Russian general, protégé and lover of the Empress Catherine, who became famous after his victories over the Turks. After the annexation of Crimea, he became Governor of Taurida (Crimea) and took the title: “the Taurien”. The book is a very precious source for the Russo-Turkish war of 1770 and especially for Crimea and northern Black sea area during the years 1770-1790. Archenholtz lived in the Crimea these years and described Potemkin’s rule and the country’s multinational society and the economic recovery. Not in Atabey, Blackmer. Only one copy tracked in public institutions worldwide (Amsterdam Public Library). Extremely rare.
