HOGARTH D.- MUNRO J., “MODERN AND ANCIENT ROADS IN EASTERN ASIA MINOR”, LONDON, 1893. First and only edition of an important and rare work. 8vo (24x16cm), pp.100. Unbound, in later wrappers. Complete, including the maps. Hogarth and Munro were British travelers in Asia Minor in late 19th century and archaeologists. Before the current work they had published several other smaller specific travel accounts. After 20 years of traveling in this area, they presented in 1891 & in Royal Geographical Society of London the current work. The R.G.S., ordered a separate publication of this scientific work at its own expenses (only 12 works had ever published in this way). It is the first systematic effort to identify and compare the ancient and modern road network of this area. Following the contemporary road network they provide a town by town, village by village travel account of all the eastern interior of Anatolia, trying to identify ancient routes & networks. Still a reference work for Asia Minor. Very rare.
