Jacob Spon (cartogr.) / Hoffman (publ.), "Heutiges ATHEN gen Mitternacht anzufehen. No place or date, but Nurenberg 1690-2. Splendid copper engraved map (36x22cm) of Athens up to Piraeusand the Saronic gulf. It is more than likely that the initial cartographer is Jacob Spon and that the map (in its initial version) has been drawn from Lycabetus hill in 1676. It is the second known ever drawn map of the city. Drawn before the Venetian conquest, Parthenon is still clearly visible untouched with the initial high minaret close by. This is one of the very few representations of Parthenon and Acropolis before the destructive Morozini bombardment of 1687. It is remarkable that many byzantine churches are accurately depicted in the map around the city. Several monuments marked, some are additions in the initial map, probably by the German mercenaries of the Venetian army of conquest. Some light spotting, folded as issued, but overall a very good copy. Not in Zacharakis, Extremely rare.
