Capuchin Monks (cartogr.) / Hoffman (publ.), “Vorstellung des Alten und Neven Athens von dem Venetiani Geographo herrn Patr.Coronelli”, No place or date, but Nuremberg 1690-2. Copper engraved map (36x21cm) of a great rarity. The map is clearly based on the famous first accurate modern map of Athens, the map of Capuchin monks drawn in 1672 and first published in 1675 inParis. Coronelli re-edited the map in 1689, just after the conquest of Athens by the Venetians. This conquest had a great impact all around Europe and this German re-edition clearly marks Coronelli as the map-maker (although Coronelli just edited an existing map). Hoffman published this rare edition, together with the previous Lot.3709 with few but significant additions. The sources for these additions could be the German mercenaries officers of the Venetian army, present in Athensduring the Venetian conquest. Some light staining and spotting, folded as issued, but overall a very good copy. Not in Zacharakis, Extremely rare.
