LE ROUGE, "LArchipel, La Grece, La Moree et Partie de la Natolie" inset: "Cipre", Paris, 1770. Separately printed copper engraved map (50x34cm, and inset map: 12x6cm) of the GreekArchipelago, Greece and surrounding areas. An independent map of Cyprus (Not in S. Ioannou) is inserted in the map of Greece. This is the first printed map of Greece with inset map of Cyprus. Le Rouge (1712-1790), an important French military cartographer had issued in early 1770 a military Atlas with 10 maps for the ongoing Russo-Ottoman war in northern Black sea (A. Karamitsos, Auction #608, lot.3328). But the Russian landing in Morea and the naval battle of Cesme changed significantly the Theatre of War. Le Rouge published separately, in late 1770/1771, four more maps including this one, which describe the theatre of war of the Orlov events (the Russian fleet operations in Greek Archipelago and Cyprus & naval battle of Cesme). This map is the prototype for several other that followed and considered one of the most advanced and accurate maps ofGreece of the 18th century. As an early military and separate publication, very few copies have survived. Not in Zacharakis. Not in BNF. Two copies identified in public Institutions worldwide. Extremely rare, including the First map of CYPRUS as inset in a map of Greece.
