LA GAZETTE 30/11/1686, large 8vo, 23x17cm, 8p., complete, Paris 1686. Very good condition. Polish operations in South Ukraine continue. The Turks tried to fortify Kamienitz. Detailed presentation of situation in Hungary, just conquered by the Austrians (two pages). Several Venetian ships in Adriatic had perished by bad weather. Detailed presentation of the new Generals in command of the Venetian army in the Levant. A Greek trader from Athens had arrived in Venice, by the order of the Greek community of the town. Greeks of Athens were willing to pay every year 9000 piastres to Venice, as a kind of voluntary contribution, following the treaty with Morosini, in order to ensure that their territory will be under the protection of the Venetian Republic. The Turks of Athens were strictly against this project, they threatened the Greeks by sending a message in Constantinople to complain against this unacceptable move. The Greeks claimed that the country was totally defenseless and that this voluntary contribution of money to Venice is the only way to protect their belongings and their lives (these Athenians steps towards Venice before the Morosini campaign in Athens have been very little investigated by the historians).
