LA QUOTIDIENNE, 7/5/1823, FOLIO, 36x24cm, 4pp, complete, very good condition. [PIRACY IN THE AEGEAN] The island of Syros was attacked again, on 22 of February by 2000 pirates on 60 small ships that arrived in the port and looted the shops and some houses. They had even thought of attacking the city, but fortunately a French war ship named Estafette appeared and fired against the pirates that finally retreated. Two of the pirate ships had been captured by the Estafette and a ship from Ydra that was anchored in the port. The Ydra’s ship captain disapproved the pirate acts but remained neutral, preferring to pay some money to the pirates. After the appearance of the French ship he decided to take action and to help the French. The chief of these pirates was named Fazzioli and had many men from the Ionian islands with him. Several people accused a man from Samos named Moralis as the secret chief of the pirates. Moralis had replied that he was in Syros by coincidence at the same time as the pirates. Two French war ships are searching the rest pirate ships. Several other details for this event. News from Chios and Crete and from other places of the Revolted Greece.
