Sagredo Giovanni, "Memorie istoriche de monarchi Ottomani", Venice, Combi, 1673. FIRST edition. Large 4to (26x20cm), pp. [6] 1069p. Contemporary full vellum. Complete, engraved title vignette, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials, effaced inscriptions to front free endpaper and title page, intermittent minor worming to margins, marginal damp-staining towards rear part, few wear to extremities, a good copy. Sagredo, a Venetian nobleman and friend of Morosini, visited several times Greece and the Levant and gathered first hand material for the Ottoman Empire. His work is the first systematic effort to understand the rise of the Ottoman power and undertakes an explanation of the Ottoman society and administrative structure. The first edition print run was only 200 copies. Its success made possible later editions in Italian, in French and Spanish. Only three copies of the First edition tracked at auctions worldwide (including the Atabey copy) the last 40 years. VERY RARE. Atabey 1079, not in Blackmer.
