Driesch G., “Historische Nachricht von der Rom. Kayserl. Gross-Botschafft nach Constantinopel”, Nurenberg, 1723. First edition in German (original in Latin) and first illustrated. 4to, 24x20cm, pp. [16] 494p. [38],12 engraved plates (some folded). Later vellum over boards. Few scattered waterstain and spoting, otherwise a very good copy. Gerard von Driesch was secretary to the Imperial embassy to the Ottoman Porte, leaded by von Pyrmont. He served in Constantinople in 1719 and returned the following year. He describes, in details the travel of the embassy through the Balkans and their sojourn in Constantinople. He gives a vivid image of the local society. The fine engravings include the depiction of their reception by the Sultan and views of the Levant originally drawn and not included in other publications. Scarce. Atabey 362, not in Blackmer.
