FIRST and only edition in German (the French edition has different plates). Small 4to, 20x17cm, pp.[14], 112 and all the sixty five (65) fine engraved plates with costumes of the Levant (one colored). Complete (but without the few pages addendum, as usual), title in red and black. Later vellum over boards. Light scattered browning and staining, marginal occasional waterstain, few edges of pages professionally restored. Charles Ferriol (1652-1722) was the French ambassador to Constantinople from 1692 to 1711. He had a huge collection of original drawings for the Levant, specifically of people of the Levant. According to Blackmer, the German edition contains plates which do not appear in the Paris folio edition, probably based on sources other than van Moor’ s original drawings. Although reduced in size, the plates are of great charm and detail. The German edition is much more RARE than the French. Blackmer 592, Atabey 431.
