Unbound part of Peter Goos’s Maritime Atlas: Nieuwe Groote Zeespiegel der Middellantsche Zee. All the chapter for the Greek Archipelago (pp 97-114 with 3 engraved sea charts in the text) of this very early Dutch Mediterranean Sea navigation pilot. The first ever printed navigation pilot, for the Mediterranean, appeared in 1618 in Amsterdam. All these early printed pilots and Atlases are extremely rare, as they were used at sea. Only one full copy of the Goos Mediterranean Atlas of 1662, in Dutch, survives intact. It describes in many details the Greek islands, providing vital information for the mariners, regarding sea routes, currents, ports, population, trade routes etc. It was the best available and most accurate description of the Greek Archipelago in the middle of 17th century.
