Giese A., “Uber den Aeolischen Dialekt”, Berlin, 1837. First and only edition. 8vo, 21x13cm. Complete, pp. 424. Contemporary leather over boards, text inside fine. Ex libris stamp in the title page, of Philippe Le Bas (1794-1860), leading French archaeologist and traveller in the Levant. A very good copy with a fine provenance. First book ever for the Aeolic Greek dialect. The rediscovery and detailed study of the Aeolic Greek was a lifetime work of the German Hellenist Albert Giese. All these scientific pioneer studies (also see Leuckart’ s and Giese’ s works) in several fields, are characteristic of the advance of most sciences regarding the Levant, in Germany of the early 19th century. VERY RARE
