Conybear W., Howson J., ” The life and epistles of St Paul”, London, 1855. First edition. Large 4to, 28x22cm. Complete in two volumes, pp.[16], 492, [6], 573 and thirty eight (38) full page engraved lithographed plates of views and maps. Contemporary full leather, inside very scattered little spotting, otherwise fine. A very good copy. Conybear and Howson travelled in the Levant in early 1850s to follow the path of St. Paul. The book is a presentation of all the places that had been visited by St. Paul and their contemporary state. It is, in reality, a travel account around the mid 19th century Levant, including Greece and Cyprus (with a rare map of the island of Cyprus). It is richly illustrated with fine lithographed views of the visited places around the Levant, including many rare views of Piraeus, Larnaca, Mytilini, Rhodes, Korinthos, Philippi and many places in Anatolia. The first edition is scarce.
