Munster Sebastian, [Konstantinopolis], Basel 1544-48. Splendid wood engraved map of Constantinople 38x20cm, from Munsters Cosmographia edition, published by Henricpetri. Cut near the edges, without margins, trimmed in the right edge with very few marginal loss, otherwise fine. This is the second earliest printed map-view of Constantinople, based on Vavasore’s original drawing made in the 1520s. It is certainly much more detailed than earlier Schedel view. Several Byzantine landmarks are still standing. The woodcut details and the lettering behind, confirm that this map is coming from the very early German editions of Cosmographia, published in Basel before 1550. RARE.
