Paspates, a native of the city, describes his own city. The book is divided in three parts. The first part is an early description of byzantine monuments. The second presents an attempt to reconstruct the medieval trade history of the city, while the third part is the first scientific attempt to identify all the still existing at that time byzantine churches of the city, accompanied by 35 fine lithographs, a true atlas with unique views. An influential work for the byzantine monuments of Constantinople. Very rare.
