Deschamps G., “Sur les Routes d Asie”, Paris, 1894. First edition. In 8vo (18x12cm). Contemporary leather over boards. Dedication, signed by the author, at the half page. Complete, 362p. Overall very good and clean. Deschamps was a French archaeologist attached to the French Ecole d’Athenes. He was fluently speaking Greek. His journey started from Piraeus and visited Chios (providing a very lengthy account) before continuing to Smyrne. As an educated scholar, he provides very detailed accounts for the Greeks of Anatolia. He continued later in several other places of Phrygia and Karia. The whole journey is around western Anatolia following unbeaten tracks for the discovery of ancient cities. The blend of the actual and ancient Greek culture in Asia Minor is remarkable in his account.
