Jahres, ferner, jedoch Gottlob ohne effect, bestritten hatt" No place or date, but Frankfurt, Serlin, June 1669. Copper engraved map (36x22cm) of Iraklio (Candia) city, during the last phase of the citys siege by the Ottomans. Beautiful detailed representation of the battles around the land walls and in the sea. Accurate plan of the city and its main buildings in the eve of Turkish conquest. The map contains around 45 key numbers, probably referred in an accompanying list. Frankfurt Fair was taking place twice per year since the early 17th century. Serlin, a Frankfurt based publisher, published between 1659/1683, a periodical named "Diarum Europaeum". A small volume of the periodical containing European and local news, was presented twice per year during the fair. In few major occasions, separately printed views or maps accompanied the text. The engraver of Serlins prints was Ammon. As the Candia siege was a major event of the time, he separately published in June 1669 and for the fair, this map of the siege of Iraklio (Candia). As the news were travelling with delay, it is clear that the map present the events up to February 1669. The city fell shortly after and this map is the last printed map of the Venetian and Christian Candia. Some expert restorations at the edges, but overall a fine copy of an Extremely Rare & almost unique work. Not in Zacharakis or any other reference. Only one copy tracked in public libraries worldwide (Frankfurt).
