First independent printing of a part of the Thousand and One Arabian Nights in Arabic (Χίλιες και μία Νύχτες). Translation in French accompanied with notes and the text in Arabic. Sindbad is a fictional mariner and the hero of a story-cycle of Middle Eastern origin. He is described as hailing from Baghdad during the early Abbasid Caliphate (8th and 9th centuries CE). In the course of seven voyages throughout the seas east of Africa and south of Asia, he has fantastic adventures in magical realms, encountering monsters and witnessing supernatural phenomena. Louis-Mathieu Langlès, the editor of this edition, was a leading figure in the study of eastern languages and literature. He was a the co-founder of the École spéciale des langues orientales in Paris and head of the Département des Manuscrits Indiens at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris.
