Graziani Antonio Maria, “De Bello Cyprio Libri Quinque”, Rome, Alessandro Zanetti, 1624. Large 4to, pp. [6], 330, [28]. First edition of one of the fundamental sources for the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1572. Engraved title-page bearing the arms of Cardinal Francesco Barberini by Claudio Mellan after Antonio Pomeranci. Woodcut decorative initials, woodcut printers device on colophon. Contemporary full leather binding, gilded covers, title on spine. Crease of the upper part of joint, soiled covers, some light browning, occasional spotting inside. A. M. Graziani (1537-1611) studied the law at Padua before becoming secretary to Pope Sixtus and, in 1592, bishop of Amelia. Pope Clement VIII sent him as his nuncio to the Italian princes and states to unite them in a league against the Ottomans. Graziani died in 1611 and his account was published only posthumously, under the supervision of his son Carolo, who dedicated the book to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII.
