Clausner Jakob Joseph (signed): Das Alte Chiechenland fur die vergleichende Erdbeschreibung . Zug (Switzerland), n. d. but c. 1782-86. UNIQUE copper engraved map 30x22cm of Greece , with an inset map of Crete 10x5cm (Insel Creta). Contemporary coloring, two very light misflolds, otherwise fine condition. J. J. Clausner (1744-1797), a Swiss cartographer and engraver studied in Strasburg and prepared several maps in the 1770s with Franz Landwing, the official cartographer of the kingdom of Bavaria. In the 1780s he returned in his home canton of Zug where he has been established and executed several maps. In the early 1780s Clausner prepared maps of several parts of the world for a German edition of world Geography. This project has been stopped before its completion in the late 1780s, due to financial shortages. Some maps were already engraved, as it was usual these times to provide the maps separately to the editor, one by one , according the time of their preparation. In 1795 most of the city of Zug, including Clausner’s working place, have been destroyed by a devastating fire. Two years later Clausner died. No reference in any book or library about those loose map-sheets. Not in Zacharakis. An almost unique example of a printed map of Greece during 18th century in Switzerland. UNRECORDED and Extremely Rare.
