The German archaeologist Ernst Curtius published this seminal work in 3 volumes between 1857 and 1867. It quickly became a best seller and republished in German. The work was translated in English by the eminent British historian A. W. Ward who divided it into 5 volumes. Curtius History was a pioneering work of 19th century classical scholarship, continuing to inspire researchers today. Contemporary binding: full leather, spine with raised bands and decorations in gilt, blind-stamped in gilt crowned coat of arms bearing the motto “Let Curzon Hold What Curzon Held”, marbled edges.
