Curtius Ernst, Ward Adolphus William (tr.), “The History of Greece”, London, Richard Bentley & Son, 1868-1873. Complete in five (5) Volumes. The German archaeologist Ernst Curtius published this seminal work in 3 volumes between 1857 and 1867. It quickly became a best seller and republished in German. The work was translated in English by the eminent British historian A. W. Ward who divided it into 5 volumes. Curtius History was a pioneering work of 19th century classical scholarship, continuing to inspire researchers today. Contemporary binding: full leather, spine with raised bands and decorations in gilt, blind-stamped in gilt crowned coat of arms bearing the motto “Let Curzon Hold What Curzon Held”, marbled edges. External wear along spines, joints and edges with small parts chipped from Vol.1 & 4 spines, front cover of Vol.2 detached.
