The Catalane Company, a mercenary army had been hired by the Byzantines to fight the Turks in Asia Minor. After their initial successes, they had requested their payment, but the Byzantines were short of money and they had executed their leaders. The Spanish mercenary army rebelled, pillaged Thrace and Macedonia and finally, after 6 years of wandering around Greece, they arrived in South Greece, crashed the local French knights at Orhomenos (1311) and the Aragonese have established a realm in Athens up to the late 14th century.
